Public charge points, hotels, holiday homes and campsites do not always provide the same connection. The right cable or adapter depends on what is actually available at each stop.

You arrive at a hotel after a long day on the road. The listing promised EV charging, but the car park has only a Type 2 socket with no cable attached. Another hotel may have a tethered cable, while a holiday home may offer only a standard three-pin socket. In each case, the EV charging cable or portable charging equipment you need is different.

For a driver travelling in Europe, the practical question is not simply which countries you will cross. It is where you expect to charge: a motorway rapid charger, a public AC charge point, a hotel, a private home or a campsite. This guide explains how to identify the connection, what to ask before departure and how to choose suitable equipment without confusing a Type 2 cable, a portable Mode 2 charger and an ordinary travel adapter.

In brief: what to check before you travel

  1. A public AC charge point may provide only a Type 2 socket. If it has no tethered cable, you need to bring your own compatible connection.
  2. A DC rapid charger normally has its CCS2 cable attached, so drivers do not usually carry a separate DC cable.
  3. “EV charging available” on a hotel or accommodation listing does not tell you whether a cable is supplied, whether the space must be reserved or how the charge point is activated.
  4. At a home, guesthouse or campsite, the visible socket is only part of the check. You also need to confirm the condition of the installation, earthing, permitted current and permission to use it.
  5. A normal travel adapter is not a substitute for an input adapter designed and approved for a specific EV charging device.

What does “EV charging cable” mean?

The term can describe more than one piece of equipment. A Type 2-to-Type 2 cable connects the vehicle to an untethered AC charge point. A portable Mode 2 charger, sometimes called a granny cable, connects the vehicle to a compatible power socket and includes an in-cable control and protection unit. These products serve different charging situations and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Before buying or packing an EV charging cable, identify the connection at both ends: the charge point or socket at the location, and the charging inlet on the vehicle. Then check the power and current supported by the vehicle, cable and power source.

Do you need a different cable in every European country?

For public charging, European connector standards have reduced many of the differences between countries. Type 2 is the main reference for AC charging, while CCS2 is widely used for DC charging. EU rules on alternative-fuels infrastructure specify Type 2 for normal-power AC charge points and Combo 2 for DC charge points. Ireland’s SEAI also describes Type 2 for AC charging and CCS for DC charging.

This common base makes cross-border travel easier, but it does not tell you whether a particular AC charge point is tethered or socketed.

Public AC charge points: the socket may be standard, but the cable is not always supplied

Some AC charge points have a tethered Type 2 connector. Others provide only a Type 2 socket. At a socketed charge point, the driver must connect the vehicle using a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable or another compatible AC charging solution.

The cable alone does not determine the charging speed. The power delivered is limited by the lowest-rated part of the chain: the charge point, the cable or connection device, the vehicle’s onboard charger and the charging conditions accepted by the vehicle. A charge point labelled 22 kW therefore does not mean every car will receive 22 kW.

DC rapid chargers: the cable normally belongs to the charger

At motorway services and rapid-charging hubs, the CCS2 cable and connector are normally attached to the charger. These assemblies are designed to handle higher power and are much heavier than an AC charging cable.

A portable Mode 2 charger or Type 2 AC cable is not used in this situation. You should still confirm that your vehicle supports the connector offered, particularly if it is an older or imported model, but you do not bring your own DC rapid-charging cable.

At your destination, the exact setup matters

At a hotel: “EV charging available” does not mean a cable is supplied

A hotel, guesthouse or holiday accommodation may advertise EV charging without describing the hardware. Two properties can use the same label while offering very different connections: an untethered Type 2 socket, a tethered Type 2 cable, a DC charger, or permission to use a domestic or CEE industrial socket.

“EV charging available” can refer to four very different configurations, so the connection, access and cable provision should be confirmed before booking.

Before booking, ask: “Does the charge point have a Type 2 socket, or a tethered Type 2 cable?” Also confirm the available power, access hours, whether the space must be booked, how charging is activated or paid for, and whether personal charging equipment is allowed. A current photo of the charger or socket often resolves the question quickly.

At a friend’s home or a holiday home

In countries such as Ireland and the UK, Type G three-pin sockets are common, but this plug format is not used across continental Europe. At a private property, identify the actual power source and check the socket’s visible condition, earthing, permitted current and the owner’s approval. Mechanical plug compatibility alone does not show that an installation is suitable for the intended charging session. If there is any doubt, ask a qualified electrician to assess it.

SEAI notes that charging from a standard household socket is possible with a suitable granny cable, while a professionally installed EV charge point is the normal dedicated home-charging option. For a temporary travel stop, the useful distinction is straightforward: use only compatible Mode 2 equipment, at the supported charging rate, after the socket and circuit have been confirmed.

If the property already has an EV charge point, ask whether it is socketed or tethered. You may still need to bring your own connection even when the host confirms that EV charging is available.

At a campsite, workshop or business site

A campsite, workshop, farm or commercial site may offer a blue or red CEE industrial socket, a domestic socket or a Type 2 charge point. Confirm the number of poles, voltage, phases, permitted current and site rules. An accessible socket is not automatically approved for EV charging. Ask for a photo and obtain permission before choosing an adapter.

National differences mainly affect domestic and private-site connections. For public charging, Type 2 and CCS2 remain the principal reference points across much of Europe. For a socket in a building or campsite, confirm the actual installation before departure.

How do you know whether a socket is suitable?

A plug that fits is not enough. Check six points before connecting:

  1. Identify the connection: AC or DC charge point, CEE industrial socket or domestic socket.
  2. Check the cable setup: socketed unit or tethered connector.
  3. Confirm compatibility: consult the vehicle, charger and adapter documentation.
  4. Check earthing: it must be functional and suitable for the charging equipment being used.
  5. Inspect the visible condition: do not use a loose, scorched, wet or damaged socket.
  6. Confirm permission and limits: check the permitted current, obtain the site owner’s approval and seek an electrician’s advice if anything is unclear.

An ordinary travel adapter is designed for everyday appliances; it is not an EV charging adapter. Use only an input connection intended for the specific charger and socket, under the manufacturer’s stated conditions.

One portable solution for changing charging locations

A portable charger is not needed for a journey planned entirely around tethered DC rapid chargers. It becomes useful when a trip alternates between untethered AC charge points, holiday homes, CEE sockets and different domestic plug formats. An interchangeable input system can cover these situations without requiring several complete chargers.
